May 29th 2008. Today...

...my nephew was born.

Today I became an aunt. This little guy who is so new we don't even know his name, marks the beginning of a new generation. It will be fun to watch my cousin trying to bring up this cute little thing. I am sure she is going to be a great mother, and I think she is pretty sure of it herself too.

At her baby shower in Calcutta, she seemed poised and prepared. But I wonder, she was only a simple girl, no marriage, no experience, no nothing - only a year and a half back. And only after two years, here we are, a husband, a son, a full life of responsibilities chalked out in front of her, just like that. Life is wierd, and awfully unpredictable.

This morning I was whiling away time on excessively simple su-dokus in the Biotech. Lab. when I got a call from my mom. She was exasperated as she yelled "Papu didi gave birth to a boy!!"
I hadn't a clue of how I was supposed to react. I said a quick "Okay" to my mom and hung up. Then rushed into the bathroom in order to get away from people. I was overwhelmed with joy and was close to tears. I don't know what aroused such strong emotions in me, but it was nice. Everything seemed nice for a while.

Perhaps it was the anticipation. The whole future of this new guy flashed before my eyes. How I would see him only during my shortlived Calcutta visits, how my aunt (the little guy's grandma) would obsess over how he needed to be clean and sleepy all the time, how somebody would call me mashi (read:aunt).
Unfortunately I won't be able to see him until I go to Calcutta next time. which is in August. I hope somebody sends me the baby pictures.

Some other recent developments:

  • Received the I-20. Estimated date of departure from India is the 16th of August.
  • Confirmed the date for the Visa interview. Freaking Out, Big Time.
  • Trying to get through the immunisation procedures without much worrying.
  • The Gujjars in the NCR region are protesting. Major Trouble. Needed to go to the hospital today for the reports. Couldn't step out of the college campus.
  • Hair has grown down pretty long.
  • This month has proven to be the wettest month in the metereological history of new Delhi. Nice to know we are making history. Or atleast the weather is, and letting us be a part of it.
  • The city just received it's version of snowfall - Sleet. What i dont get is, ordinarily it is supposed to about 45 degrees celsius this time of the year. Even if it rains, where does the water find the chill that turns it into ice pebbles the size of ping-pong balls?

Congrats on your nephew's birth! Yeah! Post pictures when you get them!

Don't freak out about your visa interview and send some of that rain to Georgia. Drought here. Yuck.

Thank you. I am sure he will be something around a 10 pound blob of pure unadulterated cuteness.

Visa is done! Tum-di-dum-di-Da!
Yesterday.
Of course it was the most freakish experience of my life so far.
Then again my life is pretty boring!
